Law banning text messaging
This law went into effect on March 8, 2012, and its violation is not classified as a serious violation and is subject to a fine of $50.
What the law provides
- Defines wireless interactive communication devices (IWCDs), which include a cellular telephone, a handheld personal computer, a smartphone or laptop computer, a similar device that
Can be used to send text, instant or e-mail messages, or to browse the Internet. - Defines a text message to include text messages, instant messages, e-mail messages, or other correspondence carried out on a wireless interactive
communication device. - Repeals and replaces local government ordinances restricting the use of wireless interactive devices by drivers. This law does not provide for the confiscation of wireless interactive communication devices. The ban on texting does not apply to GPS devices or to systems or devices installed and connected in a motor vehicle, or communication devices installed in a public public transportation, a bus or a school bus.
